While walking to school last Friday, Fort Smith senior Thomas Northrup was run over by a drunk driver in Fort Smith. Northrup attends Southside High School. He was transported to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock for multiple traumatic injuries.

Casey Simco, a local show promoter at Tha Ave, organized a Prayers for Thomas Northrup Benefit on Saturday where money was raised to help Northrup’s family. The event included raffles and live music, and all of the money raised went to the Northrup family.

Thomas’ mom is very thankful for this, telling 5News, “We appreciate everything everyone is doing for us. It means a lot for everybody to come together just to be there for us.”

A Facebook page has been set up to keep the community updated on Thomas’ status.

The suspect accused of hitting Northrup is 35-year-old Adam Shaffer, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison as of March for “revoking bond conditions from a separate set of charges”(5News). He may receive additional charges.
