April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. With all that has happened in Hollywood and the strength of the #metoo movement, awareness for sexual harassment and assault is at a high. This awareness has made its way into FHS.

On April 6, over 50 teachers and administrators wore teal to show support for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. However, the support for awareness did not stop there. Teachers and administrators once again showed support for the cause on April 13 by wearing “Time’s Up” shirts and blue ribbons. Over 60 teachers and administrators participated in this.

Some teachers who participated posted photos on social media. Their comments were flooded with admiration from former and currents students.

“I think that teachers acknowledging [sexual assualt] and being ready, I assume, to talk about it is a huge way of opening themselves up to hard conversations with students that may not have another support system or person to talk to,” junior Cat Jones said.

This also creates a space for students to feel safe to come to a teacher with any problem they may have.

“I think, in the end, teachers are adults that we see almost every day, and sometimes the only adults that students can go to when they have a hard time,” Jones said. “By being open and talking about [sexual assault], we debunk the idea that it is acceptable or will continue to be kept silent and that no person … is going to be accepting of something as horrid as sexual assault.”
